"Poland / Ukraine / Clara!"

"You'll never beat the Irish!"

In the last week of the summer term, the boys and girls from 2nd to 6th class were organised in to four different teams, England, Poland, Ireland and Germany for a Euro style soccer blitz organised by Mrs Beeton.

"Mighty Mascots"

There were mascots for each team chosen from Mrs Halligan's class and they took part in a mini-penalty competition before the serious business of the matches took place. Unbelievably each teams' mascots  scored 4 penalties each so it was level pegging going in to the blitz. Well done all the mascots!!The weather was simply awful on the day we played the blitz and the two semi-finals were more akin to an ice-skating competition so slippy was the pitch!

"The ould enemy!"

In the first semi-final Ireland took on the might of England in what was a very historic match as it coincided with the Queen's visit to Northern Ireland. Indeed the Queen herself was captain of the England team and played well in midfield!! Well done Oisin.

However, unlike the Irish team in the Euro finals, the Clara Ireland team scored a 2 - 1 victory over England in what was a very entertaining game. Goalscorers for Ireland were Ryan Boyle and Rachel McElmeel while England's scorer was Ronan Boyle.

"Poland versus Germany"

Another oustanding game of football was provided by these two teams. Germany opened the scoring with Jamie Traynor but early in the second half Conor Maguire equalised for the Poles. The game seemed to be heading for penalties when Orán Maguire popped up to clinch victory for the Germans.

"The Final"

Germany versus Ireland! It was the last day of the summer term, the 28th of June and the pressure was building. The players were nervous, the spectators were nervous and even the referee was nervous! A huge spill of rain on the pitch didn't dampen the spirits of everyone and in the end it was the Germans who came away with a 4 - 0 victory. Packie  "Schweinsteiger" McMeel accepted the trophy on behalf of his team.

A great way to end the summer term and lots of great memories. Thanks to Mrs Beeton for organising the teams and thanks to Mr Loughran for refereeing all the games. As the saying goes,

"You can never write off the Germans!"

"Wacky Races"

As you can see from a few of our photos, Eoin, Daniel, Holly and Lille-Mai had great fun taking part in three legged and egg and spoon races. Well done wacky racers!!

One of the photos show the eggs ( actually potatoes ) and the spoons taking a well earned rest on the wall after the boys and girls put them through their paces.

Poor wee spoons and potatoes!
